The tourist village
is situated 70 km from Kununurra in the East Kimberley region of Western
Australia. From Kununurra drive east on Highway 1 (Victoria Hwy) toward
Katherine (NT) for 35 km. You will see the Turn-off to Lake Argyle, a
35 km sealed road of national standard takes you through some of this
country's most magnificent and rugged scenery. The village sits atop a
hill overlooking Lake Argyle set amidst the Carr Boyd Ranges and is only
1.5km from the lakes only boat Ramp and Swimming area. The Lake Argyle
Inn provides Tourist information and Souveniers as well as great meals
a range of accommodation and caravan park/camping area. We are open 7 days
from April 1st until the end of October each year. During the wet season
the village operates on limited hours, please call first (Oct - Apr).
1.5 km north of the tourist village you will find the Nostalgic Argyle
Homestead Museum. This was reconstructed after the waters of Lake Argyle
rose to submerge one of the regions most popular and famous cattle stations
and meeting places. The homestead now acts as a museum to remind us of
how hard it was in the early days of the Kimberley Cattle Kingdoms. There
is a small entrance fee to the Museum but it is well worth the stop. Allow
yourself the time. The Argyle Homestead Museum will be of particular interest
to those who may have read the books written By Mary Durack. "Kings
in Grass Castles" and "Sons in the Saddle". These books
are available for purchase at the Museum and are a great way to indulge
in this area's rich history.
